Youth Climbing

The Central Wyoming Climbers Alliance, in close partnership with Jackson Hole Mountain Guides, Wild Iris Mountain Sports, Elemental Performance and Fitness, Lander Parks and Recreation, the National Outdoor Leadership School, and other invested local businesses, aims to increase the number of local Fremont County youth experiencing rock climbing. We will accomplish this goal by expanding and creating climbing programs that enhance young lives, create mentorship opportunities, and provide transferable problem solving skills. See below for information on programs.

Why go rock climbing?

Like many sports and activities, rock climbing can improve academic performance. The New York Times and Huffington Post have both written interesting articles on the positive physical and mental effects of exercise, specifically rock climbing on individuals. The Journal of School Health and the Journal of Human Kinetics also offer some interesting pieces about the effect of rock climbing on self-esteem, perceived self-efficacy, the desire to set and achieve goals, and the ability to overcome challenge in the face of anxiety. In addition to the personal benefits of rock climbing, participation in this sport often instills a sense of stewardship and connection to the places we climb.
